The Village Hall

Update 20 February 2012

Whaddon's Village Hall was actually built in the 19th century as the Village School, and became the Village Hall after the school closed in the 1960s. At that time a modern extension was added to the rear of the building.

The hall and recreation ground is owned by the Parish Council and managed by a Trust on behalf of the village. Plans for refurbishment have been approved by the District Council at the end of 2008, and fundraising by the Trust is beginning (see tabs below for information on all of this). We are extremely grateful to South Cambridgeshire DC for offering a grant of £25,000 towards this project.

The hall is available for bookings made by those in the village and those outside. There is also a Marquee for hire. See the Contact tab for information. See the Downloads tab for the Letting Agreement and Marquee Hire agreement.

The Whaddon Village Hall and Recreation Ground Trust

Until November 2010, the Hall was run by a committee of the Parish Council--the Village Hall Management Committee. To enable the raising of funds which are beyond the scope of the PC, it was decided to set up a Charitable Trust, running the hall and rec for the village on a long lease from the PC. Such a Charity can apply for funding of types which a public body cannot.

The Trust held its first meeting on 15 November 2010, at which point its membership was confirmed and officers elected, all to hold office until its first AGM in 2011. Charity law requires a trust such as this to have a majority of members nominated by users of the hall and rec, as well as a number of elected members. The initial composition is:

Here are the current plans for the extension and refurbishment of our Village Hall. The project is in two phases which we plan to run one immediately after the other.

Essentially we are going to preserve the existing building but bring it up to date thoroughly, with a new floor, a proper heating system, good insulation, new electrics and a general refurbishment of the windows and redecoration.

Before the main hall is tackled, however, we plan to knock down the existing flat roofed building at the rear and replace it with a bigger, more stylish building that will become our second hall. This will allow us to provide a new larger kitchen, located centrally with serving access to both halls, together with new toilets with disabled facilities, again to be accessed from both halls. There will be a single main entrance to the halls, relocated in central position on the playing field side. This will be covered by the roof of the new hall which will also cover a new veranda facing the field. Much more storage space will be provided plus a boiler/pump room to service both halls. Currently we are looking at the best type of heating system for the hall but are keen to be as ‘eco friendly’ as possible.

We envisage that the new, smaller hall will be a very attractive venue for many types of function, in particular for parties, clubs and play groups, youth activities and committee meetings, while the old hall will be a far more attractive venue for larger events and some indoor sports activities (carpet bowls, table tennis etc).

The plans were approved by South Cambridgeshire District Council in December 2008. The approved plans will be found below.

Below are small images of the plans we have so far. Clicking on the images will download PDF files of about 220k each to your computer. You can view these on screen or print them at whatever size you want. The plans are reproduced courtesy of our architects, the Sharman Knowles Partnership.
